American Legion Post 99

Message from the Department Commander

My fellow Legionnaires,

I'm sharing this email to highlight an important issue
that everyone should be aware of.  Specifically:

*Following passage of Ballot Measure 96 by an 84-16 margin, the Governor of
Oregon is now proposing significant changes to the original terms of the
measure to reduce the lottery proceeds intended to help Veteran's programs
in Oregon.*

In response to the Governor's budget proposal, the United Veteran's
Groups of Oregon (UVGO) had a meeting on Wednesday, 7 December to discuss a
plan of action.

The outcome of this meeting was a unified UVGO message to the Oregon State Legislature
and the Governor to enact Measure 96 as it was presented...and overwhelmingly approved...by Oregon voters.

Our message is clear:  DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BALANCE THE OREGON BUDGET ON THE
BACKS OF OUR VETERANS.

 Even the New York Times
<http://www.nytimes.com/elections/results/oregon-ballot-measure-96-lottery-proceeds-for-vets>
took notice of the overwhelming majority that Measure 96 passed with.

*The next step is for UVGO to present testimony in support of Measure
96 to members of the Oregon legislature on Wednesday, 14 December.  This
will be at 2 p.m. in Conference Room A at the State Capitol in Salem.  If
you can, I encourage all of you to attend and wear your Legion cover!  I will
be speaking on behalf of the UVGO and the American Legion.

What else can you do?  *Write an email or a letter (or call on the
telephone)* to your Oregon Legislative Representative and/or Senator as
soon as possible.  Let him/her know how you feel about the proposal from
Governor Brown to reduce Measure 96 funding for Veterans.
